Topic: Functional brain connectivity and language development in children with autism spectrum disorder

Sophie Mandl is a PhD candidate in the Clinical Neurosciences program at the Medical University of Vienna. This fall, she is visiting the Laboratories of Cognitive Neuroscience at Boston Children’s Hospital, where she is conducting a three month research project under the supervision of Dr. Carol Wilkinson.

For this project, Sophie is calculating and analyzing the functional connectivity patterns in toddlers diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Because language acquisition delays are highly prevalent in children with ASD, the sample includes children both with and without language delay. The goal of the project is to identify early brain markers associated with language acquisition delays in ASD.
