Christoph Bärenreuter
Christoph Bärenreuter studied Political Science in Vienna and Stockholm, focusing on the intersection of European integration, the public sphere, and political theory. Research stays took him to the European University Institute in Florence and the University of California, Berkeley, the latter of which was financed by the Marshall Plan Foundation. Following a position at the Institute of European Integration Studies at the Austrian Academy of Sciences, he began working at the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) in 2007. The FWF is Austria’s central funding organization for basic research. There, he specialized in setting up and managing numerous bilateral and multilateral funding programmed with partner funding organizations in Europe, Asia, and the Americas. He was also seconded to Brussels, where he was instrumental to establishing Science Europe, an umbrella organization for numerous European research funding and performing organizations. He continues to be involved in various Science Europe working groups. In 2025, he was elected to the Board of Trustees of the Austrian Marshall Plan Foundation.
“Top-level scientific research is impossible without international cooperation. The Austrian Marshall Plan Foundation plays a key role in strengthening the connections between researchers in Austria and the USA. In times when transatlantic relations are under pressure, the promotion of the free exchange of ideas and expertise takes on new importance.”
