An Uncertain Future: The State of Transatlantic Relations in a World on Fire.

On the occasion of the launch of the Austrian module of the Transatlantic Periscope project (https://transatlanticperiscope.org), a panel discussion on transatlantic relations will take place. One year before the next US elections, the state of relations will be discussed against the backdrop of the current crises and in view of the upcoming elections in the US, EU and Austria.

Anthony T. Silberfeld, Director, Transatlantic Relations, Bertelsmann Foundation: Tony Silberfeld joined the Bertelsmann Foundation as the Director of Transatlantic Relations in April 2014, overseeing a project portfolio aimed at strengthening the Euro-Atlantic alliance through traditional and innovative means. His research focuses on democratic innovations in cities, and geopolitical competition in space. He currently oversees two online platforms, RANGE and the Transatlantic Periscope, that provide geopolitical forecasting capacity and in-depth analyses of America’s bilateral relationships with its European partners, respectively.

Amb. ret. Eva Nowotny, Vice President Austrian Marshall Plan Foundation: After studying history at the University of Vienna, Amb. Nowotny worked in the Foreign Ministry from 1973. From 1983 to 1992 she acted as foreign policy advisor to Chancellor Sinowatz and Chancellor Vranitzky. Afterwards she was Austrian Ambassador to France (1992-1997), Great Britain (1997-1999) and the USA (2003-2008).1999 to 2003 Director General for European Integration and Economic Affairs at the Foreign Ministry. Retired in 2008. From 2009 - 2018 President of the Austrian UNESCO Commission and from 2013 - 2023 Chairwoman of the University Council of the University of Vienna.

Thomas Eder, Researcher OIIP: Thomas Eder covers major power relations for the Austrian Institute for International Affairs (oiip), as well as foreign and security policy trends in China, and in the US. Prior to the oiip he was a member of the foreign policy team at the Mercator Institute for China Studies (MERICS) in Berlin. He has published widely, including in Foreign Affairs, and in 2023/2024 takes part in an ongoing workshop series on transatlantic coordination of China policies (initiated by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation). Dr. Eder was educated in Vienna, Beijing and Hong Kong. He held fellowships and was a guest scholar at NYU Law School and the Academia Sinica in Taipei."
